Here's Sam's interview in full

Sam, welcome to Stunning Men and a big thank you for taking the time to do the interview. You are from Fairfield in Connecticut, USA and have lived in LA too.
Yes, that is correct, but I moved to Perth, Western Australia in November last year.

Awesome! First thing first ... how did you get into modelling?
It actually started from working on the TV show Dance Moms. I was on the crew there and Abby Lee Miller basically picked me to be her personal assistant/security/arm candy at red carpet events.

We can definitely see what she saw in you.
I had no idea I’d be getting into the industry as I moved to LA to be an athlete but she told me I needed to get some headshots done and get my look out there. One thing led to another and now here we are.

What do you think is the most fulfilling thing about modelling?
I’d say the most fulfilling thing about modelling is seeing the results of the hard work I put in in the gym and the kitchen. It’s hard saying no to eating burgers and pies every day so it’s nice to have it pay off and be appreciated.

How comfortable are you in showing off your physique in a shoot
I would say very! I used to be a massive individual back in college as I was an American football player. I’ve dropped about 60 pounds since then so it’s always fun showing off and looking at the changes over the years.

You are looking amazing. How on earth did you get into such shape?
I've been a competitive athlete for as long as i can remember so i've always had the drive and worl ethic to make it to the gym every possible day to be beter on the field. When my American football career ended I realised I didn't have to keep all the size I had so I switched up my diet and training to a more lean look and with some time and discipline my body started changing.

When did your passion for fitness start?

As I’ve said I’ve been playing sports as long as I can remember. I started playing gridiron when I was about 8 years old and from then on just about everything I did was to be better at that. So that is when I had the passion to get strong and fast, but my love for health and fitness really started after my career ended when I started dropping weight and I realised I was feeling better on a day to day basis not carrying around an extra 60 pounds.

What keeps you determined and driven to work out?

I honestly just love being in the gym. Back in Los Angeles I would go to Gold’s Gym in Venice sometimes twice a day with my gym buddies because it was just a great environment to be around. I also still am a competitive athlete playing Aussie Rules Football so it pays off to be in top shape on the field.

What is your diet like?

My diet is pretty boring honestly, breakfast is either oatmeal plus fruit or eggs and toast, lunch is typically a sandwich with some vegetables or potatoes, for dinner I’ll have chicken breast and veggies, snacks throughout the day include muesli bars, peanut butter and bananas, and for dessert I’ll have a bowl of yogurt with some mango sliced in and some frozen berries on top.

If you had a cheat day, what would be your favourite food?

Oh that’s tough, as a former fat guy I have a lot of favourites. Pizza, burgers, chicken wings, cake, cookies, pancakes, waffles, French toast you name it. I love food.

All at once? Just kidding … Now can you share your fitness regimen with us?

Most of my fitness comes through training with my footy team. We play in a high level league so we have strength and conditioning coaches and physios on hand to help us out. In the weight room I usually lean towards the Olympic lifts and the holy trinity of bench/squat/deadlifts when left to my own devices but our coaches have been super helpful with designing programs to make us individually better athletes.

And what’s the best form of cardio for you?

The best form of cardio in my opinion is definitely high intensity interval sprints. I like going all out when I train so the pattern of going as hard as physically possible followed by a rest then going hard at it again works really well for me.

Now a few quick fun questions if we may? Do you think you are a good date?

I like to think I am but you’d have to ask some of the girls I’ve gone out with! I know how to have a good time and hold a conversation well and that’s usually carried me through, but there have definitely been some bad dates sprinkled in that mayyybe could be seen as my fault. Most reviews have been resoundingly positive though.

Your favourite song or piece of music to play while training or running?

I like really high intensity stuff with my training most times. If I’m having a big leg day and trying to hit a PR on something I’ll need something loud and angry like Guns n Roses, Metallica, or AC/DC. If I’m doing more sprint related work or lighter weights I like some hip hop and rap like Run the Jewels. But if I’m going on a run for distance it doesn’t even really matter I can zone out to whatever as long as it’s a song I like.

Do you have any other passions besides fitness?

I was a pretty big nerd growing up so I was huge into fantasy like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, love video games as well as an escape from reality, could definitely be said that I play them too much. Before I left LA I was working as an actor as well and I started to really enjoy that at the end there so that will definitely be something I’m pursuing in the future. Also it is still semi-related to fitness but I am a huge numbers geek with sports. Love statistics and advanced metrics in games like baseball and the NBA and figuring out how to use them to better understand the games. It is really cool to me that some of these sports are over a hundred years old and we’re still figuring out ways to play them more efficiently and effectively

What can’t you live without?

That’s a tough one, I moved across the US multiple times east to west coast when I was younger and now just recently hopped on a plane to the other side of the world to start a new life with very little planning and even less savings, so I’ve gotten good at living without things. I have been lucky enough to keep a few close friends from each stop on my adventure that I still stay in touch with and I’d say they’re the most important to me. Wouldn’t have been able to make it as far as I have without the support of them and my family. Oh and memes, definitely can’t live without memes.

Could you finish these two sentences for us? You wouldn’t know, but I’m very good at …

pokemon games. Still have my red version on the Gameboy colour with a level 100 Charizard and Mewtwo.

Now ... I’m just not very good at …

… staying healthy, I’m crazy accident and injury prone. A lot of it was from the nature of the game but from about the time I was 16-21 I was having a surgery to fix a broken bone or torn something or other every offseason.
One last question Sam, what is your big dream?

My big dream was always to make it to the NFL and win a super bowl, but now that that ship has sailed and I’ve gotten into the different phases of life in LA and around the world I just want to find endless success in everything. I want to win a championship with my AFL team, I want to be a hugely successful movie star and model, I want to grow a sports agency business, I really just want a taste of everything right now.

Sam, it has been a real pleasure to interview you! Thank you for your time and for being such good sport. All the best for the future.
