Matthew's interview in full
Matthew, welcome to Stunning Men and a big thank you
for taking the time to do the interview. You currently live in Perth, Western
Australia ...
Yes, but I am from Albany.
First thing first … how did you get into modelling?
I had been told by mates and some people that I work
with that it’s something I should consider. A good mate of mine is part of an
agency, and he was able to forward my details onto the agent, who was keen to
have me on board.
What do you think is the most fulfilling thing about
modelling?
At this stage, it’s knowing all the hard work is
paying off. I’ve sacrificed a lot to reach the point that I’m at, and I don’t
intend on slowing down anytime soon.
How comfortable are you in showing off your physique
in a shoot?
Completely. My physique will never be as great as I
want it to be, but I’m not about to let self-doubt control my life.
You are looking incredible. How did you get into such
shape?
Thanks! Years of training and commitment to a
healthier lifestyle. I rarely drink, and get up at 3:30am to hit the gym before
work.
Early riser then! When did your passion for fitness
start?
Since my early teens. I’ve always enjoyed being
active, but it was since high school that fitness really became important to
me. I found running 6-7kms daily was a great way to rid myself of the stress
and frustration that you can experience in school. Running also kept me ahead
in the sports I played.
What keeps you determined and driven to work out?
In short, I’m inspired and motivated by many things. Making
my family proud and financially free though, particularly my parents and
grandparents, is one of my greatest drivers.
What is your diet like?
Great. When I’m not cutting as much body fat as I can,
it’s only moderately strict. I eat chocolate (quality dark chocolate that is)
every day, even during prep! I do however almost spend more time in the kitchen
than in the gym.
If you had a cheat day, what would be your favourite
food?
Cheat meals aren’t a big thing for me. If I’m straying
from my set meals, I’d rather eat great food at a restaurant than my body
weight in fatty fries. Freshly made good quality pizza is always a winner.
Can you share your fitness regime with us?
Like my diet, there is a small amount of flexibility
occasionally. Generally, I follow a four-day split, which includes chest and
shoulders, followed by legs, arms the day after and then back. I train my core
just about daily at home with variations of crunches and planks/bridges.
And what’s the best form of cardio for you?
None! My rapid metabolism makes maintaining my current
weight a challenge as it is without adding cardio to burn even more calories.
My day job also keeps me very active, so I find extra cardio isn’t necessary.
Now a few quick fun questions if we may? Do you think
you are a good date?
(Matt laughs) Definitely! I try to keep chivalry
alive, so if we go to dinner you won’t have to pay for it. I also believe I’m a
very easy person to talk to.
It’s a date then! What’s your favourite song or piece
of music to play while training or running?
I have a Spotify playlist that I update regularly.
Favourite song for the gym right now would have to be “New Addy” Eli Sostre. Throws
me into a deep training zone.
Do you have any other passions beside fitness?
Too many to list. Travel, camping, most things
involving the ocean and more.
What can’t you live without?
As cliché as it may sound, the ocean. Its ability to
heal the mind and body cannot be overstated. Because I work in maritime, there
is rarely consecutive days that go by that I’m not on or in salt water. For me,
few things are more grounding and relaxing for the soul than being so far from
the shore that there is no land in sight.
Could you finish these two sentences for us? You wouldn’t
know, but I’m very good at …
… eating!
Now … I’m just not very good at …
… honestly, I can be better at everything. My
recollection of names though is terrible. I’m not exceptional at singing
either.
One last question Matthew, what is your big dream?
I have a lot that I want from life, but one of my
biggest dreams is also what drives me, to make my family proud and financially
free. There’s zero chance that I will be working in a 9am to 5pm (the rat race)
job until retirement age.
Matthew, it has been a great to interview you! Thank you for your time
and for being such good sport. All the best for the future.
