Here's Corey's interview in full
Corey, a warm welcome to Stunning Men and many thanks for taking the time to do the interview.
Could we start off with talking a little about yourself and your background? You come from a small town in Ontario, is that correct?
This is true; I grew up in a small Northern Canada town with a population of 10,000 people with the primary industry being gold mining. It was a very blue collar hardworking town and I believe that is where I was able to build a strong work ethic that I bring into my career both as a model and aspiring actor. It’s pretty much as far away from anything entertainment wise in terms of this industry and it’s truly unique for people of my hometown to see what I’m doing. The majority of the people don’t understand it to be honest and have no idea what goes on in the entertainment industry as a whole.

After moving to Toronto to pursue my dreams and passion for modelling is when things really started to change. I have always been very active in sports and enjoyed working out, but once I began to see and work with people that truly understood the science behind it all is when I took everything to another level. I’m a complete health freak on so many levels from the food I put into my body to grooming to working out. It’s a lifestyle I love and matches well with my pursuit in modelling.
How did you get into modelling? Is it something you always wanted to do?
Growing up modelling was something that I never thought about as I said growing up in a small town with no exposure to anything remotely close to modelling. I was a random encounter with a photographer by the name of Kerry Allan who asked me if I’d like to do a photoshoot with him because he liked my look. I sat on it for about 2 weeks and finally called him up and said yes. We booked a shoot for the following Saturday and followed that up with a viewing in his lounge. It was during that viewing that I realised that I could do this. Looking at the raw images and how impressed Kerry was at the time signalled to me that I had the ability to do this. After that it snowballed from there and continued on.

What do you enjoy the most about modelling?
The thing I enjoy most about modelling is the ability to stand up there and do the things that 99% of the population will never do. To me it’s one of the most macho things you can do is to stand up there in a pair of underwear and say to the world that this is the real me, the whole package. It’s a moment that everything you’ve done in your life can pay off for you. My body is the sculpture that i've worked years to achieve and being able to model it in front of people is my way to showcase all the hard work I've put in.

How do you think fitness modelling compares to fashion modelling?
Fitness modelling and fashion modelling are two completely different animals because of the focus of each respective industry. Fitness modelling has an overall focus of “good health” and is selling a lifestyle more than just a product. You are representing the brand as they sell a product to a prospective customer that they want to join their community. It has much more meaning to the model in fitness compared to fashion. In fashion you are simply a hanger for the clothing. You are just a face and it’s all about the product you are selling. I’ve heard it said many times that it doesn’t matter how you look as long as the product looks good (Corey laughs). So in essence it’s less about you as a model and more about the product.

How do you prepare before a photoshoot?
This all depends on the type of photoshoot that I’m doing. If it’s a fitness photoshoot it involves a series of 5 workouts prior to the shoot with a particular diet that will allow my body to be ripped and have great muscle definition. If it’s going to be for a fashion or commercial shoot with clothing on, it’s not so important how the body looks and it’s more preparation on the face. Making sure the face is properly groomed, trimmed, moisturised, and that the hair is perfect. I also like to practise facial expressions in the mirror for 2-3 hours prior to a shoot so that I can easily change emotions on command.

What advice would you give a new model?
I would have to say that a new model should really know what they want out of modelling and to create the limits that they’ll stay within. Many people will try to push those limits to get what they want and holding strong to your beliefs and goals will serve you better in the long run. Remember that no one other than yourself can make your career; no casting director, no photographer, your destiny is in your hands to deliver upon what you want. These people can help you, but of course only if it’s something that you want at the same time. You have to be real and genuine, the camera can easily pickup false or fake actions and if you want to become good at modelling you need to live the role.

You have a stunning physique. How do you keep in shape and healthy? Do you do any sport?
Complete gym rat in every aspect of the life. You can find me in the gym 10-12 times a week training cardiovascular activity, weight training, doing plyometrics, and agility drills. On top of that I sprint outdoors once a week and play competitive football as well.

What are your top three favourite exercises and why?

Exercise #1: Squats –I’ve always trained my legs hard to prevent injury in sports and the squat is the ultimate full body exercise that activates so many muscle groups.

Exercise #2: Incline Dumbbell Curls –This exercise allows you to get full extension on the bicep and places a great deal of pressure throughout the entire movement. Plus since you are in the seated position you cannot swing and use momentum to lift the weight.

Exercise #3: Decline Situps – With the negative angle of the bench, you can activate all areas of the abdominal section and feel a great burn. Adding weight to this exercise will also allow you to build mass to your abs.

What’s the best form of cardio for you?
I believe the best form of cardio is sprinting like a track athlete. This is a form of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) that requires you to give max effort for a short period of time with a short rest period. This way you can increase your heart rate and keep it there for a prolonged period of time. Plus every time you lift your leg in the air you are activating your abdominals. Most people don’t know that, but sprinting is one of the best forms of cardio for working your abs and getting that desirable 6 pack.

What’s your gym/training routine like?
My training routine is one that is comprised of 6 morning cardio session Monday-Saturday, Football Tuesday night, and 6 weight training sessions late afternoon. The routine often changes to keep the body guessing but that’s the basic outline that I’ve been following for the past year. The type of training also changes if I’m in contest prep compared to a building phase.

How do you keep motivated?
Life is too short not to be motivated. I have so much motivation to be somebody and to do something with my life that I can’t help but to be my best everyday. Having people around me that I’m accountable too is also a motivating factor because these people are counting on me to perform. Everyone from my significant other to sponsors expect me to give my best every single day.

How do you fit bodybuilding and fitness into your life? Is it a difficult thing to achieve?
Not at all, bodybuilding and fitness is my life. Everything else fits around it and only happens once the training is complete. It’s not a career that you can do part time or on the side, if you want to be the best you need to live and breathe it every moment of everyday because all your actions have a particular purpose that builds towards the final goal.

How do you approach a challenge?
I eat it for breakfast and make it the most important thing that I must overcome that day. Challenges are tests that are meant to stretch you out of your comfort zone and allow you to grow as an individual. So I look at them straight in the eyes and attempt to conquer them.

What do you eat in a normal day?
In a normal day I eat a lot of food from a wide range of sources. For proteins I eat egg whites, chicken, beef, tilapia, salmon, and whey protein powder. Carbohydrates are mostly complex ones from oatmeal, sweet potato, and berries. Fats come from olive oil, almond butter, and avocado.

Once a week I’ll have a “cheat meal” and eat whatever I want without feeling guilty about it. That meal of choice for me is often an entire pizza and ice cream.

You are an aspiring actor; would you like to tell us a bit about this?
In recent times I have been showing more of an interest in acting as another way to broaden my skills and abilities. Companies want you to be a double threat in terms of being able to model in a photoshoot, but also act in their commercials. I took a 3 month acting course in Toronto and began applying to casting in acting. I’ve done a couple of different things over the past year in terms of commercial, short films, and television pilots. I tend to land the gigs that I play your typical “American Jock” as being the star quarter back of the football team, or a gym junkie (Corey laughs).

What do you do in your down time?
I honestly don’t have much downtime because if I’m not training I’m promoting myself as a model and actor. Fun things that I like to do are often just to get back in nature and slow things down a little. Let the city life go for a couple moments and leave all the stresses behind for that brief period of time. I very much enjoy hiking, running, dirt biking, and fishing.

Do you have any role models? People who inspire you?
In fitness I look up to Jay Cutler, he’s a 4 time Mr. Olympia and for you guys who don’t know, it’s like winning the Superbowl for bodybuilding and said to be the outright best bodybuilder in the world that given year. Everything from his work ethic to his physique are things that inspire me and push me to become better. I think it’s important to look up to someone that has accomplished the things that you want to achieve, that way they know what it’s like because they’ve experienced it first hand.

In terms of a businessman I look up to Sylvester Stallone  because he has really embraced everything that it is to be a model, actor, professional, and overall great person.

Now a few quick fun questions if you are game? Do you think you are a good date?
I think I’m a boring date (he laughs again), I eat salad and most often in bed by 10pm since I get up so early to train every morning. I can be the most random and spontaneous person so I guess I can bring some excitement to a date.

Are you a brief man or a boxer kinda guy?
I’m a boxer guy because I need the room to breathe.

What do you listen to on your iPod?
At this moment I’m listening to a fellow Canadian of mine Drake. I have his entire new album on my iPod and it plays throughout my entire workout.

Your favourite song/piece of music to play while running?
My favourite song to listen to when running has to be “Pornstar Dancing” by My Darkest Days. Such a great rock song that is filled with sexual charged lyrics.

What kind of movies do you like?
I’m a comedy kind of guy and enjoy a good laugh when I can. Can’t say I’ve watched a movie in about a year that I haven’t been in.

What three words describe you best?
Intense. Passionate. Determined.

One last question Corey, where do you see yourself and what would you like to be doing in 10 years time?
I see myself living in Canada in 10 years just outside of Toronto in a smaller community starting a family. By that time I hope to achieve everything that I want in my career and be able to give 100% focus on my children and wife.

Corey, it has been a pleasure to interview you! Thank you for your time and for being a good sport. All the best for the future!
